Amanda Bluglass

Viva. Punk, Rebel. 82

Where are you from?

Originally from the West Midlands, lived in Westcountry for over 20 years.

What got you into filmmaking?

I studied English Literature at Cambridge University, followed by Post graduate Broadcast Journalism which led to a career in BBC News. I've always had an interest in art and photography, so when I became a freelance director/producer the quality of the image was as important as the story telling.

How did the idea for "Viva. Rebel, Punk. 82" come about?

I was looking for a short documentary to follow up on my previous film, 'Ray: A Life Underwater' (about a 78 year old deep sea diver). Someone told me about Viva and after meeting, I knew she was wonderful and would be a great subject for a film.

Generally, how important are Devon & Cornwall to you in your filmmaking/film inspirations?

I like to work locally if possible, as I adore  Devon and Cornwall. Opportunities take me all over the world and particularly to the USA, though.

How important is it to you that females get a voice in filmmaking? Do you think females in the film industry are doing enough to get their voices heard?

Like all industries, women lag behind in pay, opportunities and visibility. It is not always down to them to get their voices heard, there is a male-dominated bias, which is not exclusive to film making.
